The tradition of wedding favors
Wedding favors are mementos given out by the newlyweds to their guests as a symbol of gratitude for being present at the wedding ceremony and sharing the most special day with them. In simple words, it is a wonderful way to say “thank you” to all your guests. The gesture of giving away the wedding favors is age old. However, it is unclear as to when this tradition of giving away the wedding favors, first started.
It is believed that, the Aristocrats in Europe first started the idea of bestowing the wedding favors. These favors were known as bonboniere, which consisted of crystal or porcelain made small boxes, containing cubes of sugar, which were costlier in those days. Therefore, the wedding favors were considered as a symbol of wealth and royalty, only practiced at the weddings of the rich.
As the times changed, the sugarcoated almonds replaced the bonboniere as favor, which was packed in elegant fabric, known as the confetti. This was said to represent wealth, health, longetivity, fertility and happiness. It is also considered that sweetness of the sugar and the bitterness of the almond represented the bitter sweet moments of a married life.
Today, wedding favors are quite different and are mostly used as a keepsake. The favors can be personalized with the name of the couple and the wedding date. Now days there are more creative wedding favors coming up and some of the wedding favors can even be made at home.
Whatever be your wedding favor, the one gifted from the heart is sure to be loved and remembered by your guests.
