The custom of tossing the wedding garter
One of the longest standing wedding customs is the “custom of tossing the wedding garters” and is still one of the widely practiced American wedding traditions. The bride is the one, who wears the wedding garter on the big day. This custom is popular among the brides who would like to incorporate a traditional feel to their wedding.
The wedding garter is a piece of clothing, which the bride wears just above or below her knee. This garter is removed by the groom after the wedding ceremony and tossed off towards the bachelor males present at the wedding. It is believed that the man who catches this tossed garter is the next to marry or also the first one to dance after the wedded couple with the woman who catches the bridal bouquet.
From earlier times, the wedding garter is considered as a sign of good luck, modesty, love and fidelity. Lately, many brides prefer to wear two wedding garters, one for the tossing and the other for keepsake. The wedding garters are also one of the ideal options for the brides where they can include the “some thing blue” element in their dressing. Moreover, the “something old”, can also be this wedding garter, which is “passed down within their family”.
The custom of tossing the wedding garter, completely depends on the couple and is not compulsory, “whether or not it is tossed”, the wedding garter is sure remain as a “special memento” of their big day.
