“Something old, something new…”
“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in your shoes……”.
There are many age-old traditions and rituals that can be carried out at a wedding ceremony. The stated above is an American wedding tradition, which is related to the bride. This saying is said to be carried on and practiced from the Victorian times. The bride is suppose to have or carry some of the things which are borrowed, old, new, blue in color and also carry a six pence in her shoes for good luck, fertility and to have a happy married life.
There are different meanings attributed to this tradition or saying. The most commonly known is that the something old refers to the link of the bride with her family or past. As a token of something old the bride can wear the traditional jewelry of her family, something of her mother or grandmother, or even wedding gown which can be passed down from the generations.
The something new can comprise of any other bridal accessory, jewelry, wedding gown, and shoes or for that matter any thing. The bride needs to carry something borrowed which symbolizes that there are family and friend to stand by her in times of joy and sorrow.
The something blue is usually a wedding garter or even a piece of jewelry that the bride can wear to represent loyalty and also faithfulness. The silver sixpence is for good luck through- out their married life.
